Sock Out Cancer®, in conjunction with the DICK’s Sporting Goods Open, proudly announced that Sock Out Cancer has been named the 2022 PGA TOUR Champions Charity of the Year.

Founded in 2017, the mission of Sock Out Cancer is to assist financially distressed cancer patients and their families pay for non-medical necessities such as food, transportation, and housing, so that patients can focus their energy on fighting cancer. Since its inception, Sock Out Cancer® has raised more than $1.3 million for participating hospital foundations and other charitable organizations.

As the Charity of the Year recipient, Sock Out Cancer will receive a $30,000 donation from PGA TOUR Champions, which will be distributed to the Lourdes Hospital Foundation and the UHS Foundation. “It is important to note that all dollars raised in the local community, such as Binghamton, Syracuse, Albany, New York City, etc., do stay local. I want to take this opportunity to thank our two local foundations that have agreed that every dollar we give them, they give to financially stressed cancer patients without any administrative charges,” stated Bruce Boyea, Security Mutual Life Chairman of the Board.

Sock Out Cancer, the DICK’s Sporting Goods Open, and Broome County Community Charities also jointly announced that Birdies For Cancer will be returning to the DICK’s Sporting Goods Open in 2023. Birdies For Cancer is an initiative at the DICK’s Sporting Goods Open where donors can make a pledge (or flat donation) per birdie made at the tournament, with an additional 10% match made by Security Mutual Life. “Our hope is that we will take Birdies For Cancer to other PGA TOUR Champions events across the country as we seek to make Sock Out Cancer a nationwide non-profit for the benefit of cancer patients throughout the country,” said Kirk Gravely, President & CEO of Security Mutual Life.

In 2022, Birdies For Cancer and other initiatives at the DICK’s Sporting Goods Open, raised $30,000 for Sock Out Cancer, which was distributed to the Lourdes Hospital Foundation and the UHS Foundation. “We’re always looking for ways to think outside the box where we can continue to utilize golf as a springboard to generate more funds for our community,” stated John Karedes, Executive Director, DICK’s Sporting Goods Open.

Sock Out Cancer looks forward to continuing its valued partnership with the DICK’s Sporting Goods Open, Broome County Community Charities, and local hospital foundations to continue to make a lasting impact on the lives of cancer patients and their families.
